Mockingbirds - Conservation
Mockingbirds - StatusMockingbirds are protected by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as songbirds and cannot be harmed, nor their habitat be molested. They are common and widespread and don't require special conservation measures besides habitat conservation. There are many more Mockingbirds in the USA now than when the first explorers came to this land. Landscaping and beautification efforts create excellent habitats for Mockingbirds. In the 18th and 19th centuries, there was a strong market for caged Mockingbirds. Today they are again popular as pets for their songs, but it's better to attract them into your garden rather than keeping them in a cage. But some species of Mockingbirds are listed as endangered. They are Charles and Tropical Mockingbirds that inhabit Galapagos Islands and Ecuador. The population is at risk because of introduced rats' and cats' predation. The measures taken include population monitoring and banning of non-native animals introduction. Mockingbirds - Importance for HumansThe Mockingbird is a natural pest controller, feeding on insects. By eating berries and fruits, it assists plants in seed dispersal. Also the beautiful singing of this bird accompanies suburban life. To attract Mockingbirds into your garden place a special fruit feeder, birdbath, or water source and plant berry bushes such as holly, mulberries, raspberries, blackberries, dogwood, elderberries, grapes, or figs.
